Free Jynkies!

Jynx has taken well to the antibiotics. The swelling in her eye is almost completely gone. Her WBC count is normal — a little high here and there in other tests but nothing alarming. The vet has cleared her to come home.

Thank you all for the well-wishes in the previous post.

Bastard Strangles.

My mare.
She has it.

Spent yesterday evening at the vet’s office. My Walker mare has developed bastard strangles — it’s infected the ocular lymph nodes of her left eye.

She’ll be staying at the vet’s for the week.

Here’s hoping for a swift recovery…

Back from the barn earlier than anticipated. I’m getting spooky efficient with the feedings. Morning feedings with vetting of the sick 2-year-old are down to less than an hour; evening feedings down to about 35 minutes. I’ll have developed the swing of the thing by the time the owner comes back Monday a.m.

Tales of a Tired Ranch Hand

For the last few days I’ve been cleaning, scrubbing, disinfecting … we’ve had a couple of horses break out with streptococcus equi—a.k.a. Strangles. Generally non-fatal but highly contagious. We’ve set up quarantine, established clean areas, established the ‘hot zone’ etc etc…
I basically used my dealings with radioactive, contaminated waste as the model for our quarantine [...]
